Construction
Church construction is a tremendous need. There are still many churches that are meeting under trees or tarps. These projects are done in a three way partership between the State Board of Missions, the Haitian church, and an Alabama church. The SBOM provides funds to purchase property for the church building, the Haitian church provides the labor for the foundation and slab, while the Alabama church provides the labor for the remaining part of the building and funds for all building materials. Typically, a church building will cost $12,000-$15,000.
Another construction option is to work at an orphanage that is being sponsored in a joint project by First Baptist Montgomery, Children's Hope, and the SBOM. Housing for children, dining facilities and volunteer housing are some of the projects that will be done at the orphange site. There is an on site coordinator that will assist teams.
Teams will be asked to provide all equipment/tools necessary to complete the project. All of these must be transported in checked luggage. Any tools that can be left behind for future groups would be appreciated.
Evangelism/Discipleship
These teams will work primarily in communities where Haitian Baptists are planting churches. Prayer walking, door to door visitation and outreach activities for adults, youth and children are examples of projects. Evangelistic meetings, Bible studies, intensive discipleship studies, and worship services may also be scheduled.
Equipment and supplies need to be provided by the team. This includes teaching materials translated into French and/or Creole, notepads, pens, Bibles, tracts (Bibles and tracts can be pre-purchased in Haiti, given enough time) or any materials needed for your specific project.
Medical Teams Health care is an ongoing need. The short term goal is to provide physical relief from basic medical problems in a Christ-centered environment. Long term goals include enabling and teaching community health and prevention. Teams should include physicians, nurse practioners, nurses and someone to dispense medications (a nurse or pharmacist). Non medical persons on the team can serve as administrator and chaplain to pray with patients as they wait.
Teams will be responsible for purchasing and taking in all medications and supplies. Lists of suggested meds and quantities are available from the office of Global Missions.
